Overview

WEIDU™ WD-838 Butyl Hot Melt Sealant is a single-component, solvent-free, non-curing thermoplastic sealant designed as the primary seal for insulating glass units. It provides extremely low water vapor permeability, ensuring long-term airtightness for multi-chamber IG configurations.

The sealant offers excellent adhesion to glass, aluminum alloy, galvanized steel, and stainless steel while maintaining permanent plasticity without cracking or hardening across a wide temperature range. Its outstanding aging and weather resistance make it an ideal choice for high-performance insulating glass systems.

Applications

Applications

  • Primary Sealant for Insulating Glass Units (IGUs)
  • Dual-seal insulating glass systems
  • Multi-chamber IGU configurations that require low moisture transmission
  • Applications requiring strong adhesion to glass and metal spacers

Compatible Substrates

  • Glass
  • Aluminum alloy
  • Galvanized steel
  • Stainless steel

Not Recommended For

  • Structural glazing applications
  • Use as a standalone secondary seal (must be paired with polysulfide, polyurethane, or silicone)
  • Surfaces that are wet, damp, frosted, or contaminated
  • Continuous water immersion
  • Substrates that may release oils, plasticizers, or solvents
  • Use outside the specified service temperature range

How to Use?

Surface Preparation

  • All bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, or grease.
  • The recommended application temperature range is 120°C – 135°C (248°F – 275°F) before extrusion.
  • Must be applied using a specialized hot melt butyl extruder.
  • The construction environmental temperature should be no lower than 5°C (41°F).
  • Apply using specialized insulating glass extrusion equipment. The sealant must be applied at the correct temperature and profile to ensure proper flow, adhesion, and formation of a continuous ribbon.

Limitations

  • Do not apply to surfaces that are frosted, damp, or wet.
  • Not suitable for use as a structural glazing sealant.
  • Should not be used as a standalone secondary seal (must be used in a dual-seal system with a polysulfide, polyurethane, or silicone secondary sealant).
  • Not for continuous direct contact with water or underwater applications.
  • Do not use on substrates that might release oils, plasticizers, or solvents.
  • Not recommended for applications outside its specified service temperature range.
