What is Window and Door Sealant?
If your window sill leaks during rain or your windows let in drafts in winter, nine times out of ten it’s because you chose the wrong sealant when installing the glass.
Having worked in the sealant industry for so many years, I often get asked by people with super cheap tubes of sealant, “Can this be used to seal windows?” Every time I see this question, I worry for their windows. Today, I’ll talk about what window and door sealant actually is and how it differs from regular sealant.
What is Window and Door Sealant?
Window and door sealant, simply put, is a sealant specifically used to bond glass to window frames. Whether your window frames are aluminum alloy, PVC, or wood, you need it to hold the glass in place and seal any gaps.
It does three things:
1. Secures the glass: Don’t underestimate this; you’ll see why on windy days—if the sealant isn’t strong enough, the glass will rattle.
2. Blocks rainwater: This sealant is crucial for preventing leaks.
3. It’s flexible: In hot summers and cold winters, window frames expand and contract due to temperature changes. If the sealant isn’t elastic and is hard, it will easily break.
Good window and door sealant will remain elastic even after a winter in sub-zero temperatures. Inferior sealant becomes brittle in winter and cracks under the summer sun, crumbling easily with a finger.
What’s the difference between window and door sealant and ordinary sealant?
Many people think they’re all sealant, so how different can they be? Let me tell you, the difference is huge.
1. Different sun resistance: Windows are exposed to the sun every day. Professional window and door sealant has UV resistance, maintaining its performance even after ten or eight years of exposure. If you use ordinary interior window sealant to seal windows, you might be lucky and it will last a year, but most will crack and leak within two years.
2. Very poor elasticity: Try pulling on it. Good window sealant can be stretched twice its length without breaking, and it will spring back immediately when you release it. Ordinary sealant either can’t be stretched, breaks easily, or doesn’t retract after being stretched. Window frames expand and contract with temperature changes; if the sealant lacks elasticity, it will break when it contracts in cold weather.
3. Adhesion strength: Glass and aluminum alloy surfaces are smooth, and ordinary sealant won’t adhere well, peeling over time. Professional window sealant is different; it can firmly hold these smooth surfaces.
4. Acidity/alkalinity matters: Most window sealants are neutral, odorless, and suitable for coated glass, not corroding the coating. There are also acidic sealants, which are better for bonding aluminum alloys. However, if you don’t distinguish between types and buy inferior acidic sealant, you might corrode the window frame.
So here’s my advice: when choosing sealant for doors and windows, buy the kind that clearly states “for doors and windows” or “weather-resistant sealant” on the packaging. Don’t settle for something like kitchen and bathroom anti-mold sealant.
How to choose a reliable door and window sealant?
It’s normal to be unsure which sealant to choose from when you’re browsing through building materials markets with all sorts of different kinds on the shelves. Just remember these points:
1. Don’t just look at the brand; look for these keywords on the packaging: Look for “for doors and windows” or “weather-resistant sealant” on the front of the packaging. If it says “kitchen and bathroom anti-mold,” “beauty sealant,” “ordinary sealant,” or “water-based sealant,” pass on it—that stuff will be ruined in a year.
Some people use kitchen and bathroom sealant to seal windows. While it may be anti-mold, it’s not sun-resistant. After summer, the sealant cracks like a tortoise shell, and it crumbles easily when you try to pick it off.
2. Squeeze, pinch, and pull: Ask the seller for a sample to try before you buy. Good adhesive feels elastic to the touch, like a gummy candy. Pinch it with your fingernail and it will spring back. Pull it and it will stretch without breaking. What does inferior adhesive look like? Some are hard as dried clay, others are soft and mushy like mud, breaking easily when pulled. Never buy this kind of adhesive.
3. Check the execution standard: If the packaging shows the execution standard as GB/T 14683, and it meets Class F (for building joints), it satisfies the weather resistance requirements for doors and windows. If it meets Class GW (for non-structural assembly of building curtain walls), the quality is excellent. For ASTM C920, the higher the number after Class, the better; 25 and 50 are both acceptable.
Tips for Proper Application
Choosing the right adhesive is important, but improper application is also a waste. Here are a few tips:
1. Cleaning is paramount: Use a utility knife to scrape off the old adhesive. Wipe the glass and window frame with a cloth dampened with alcohol. Make sure there is no dust, oil, or water on the surface. Cleanliness directly determines the adhesion of the adhesive.
2. Apply masking tape: If you find the adhesive application crooked and unsightly, apply masking tape to both sides of the gap. After application, peel it off for a professional-looking result.
3. Proper application technique: Cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle and apply at a consistent speed, ensuring the adhesive fills the gap completely. Then, use a scraper or your finger (dipped in a little dish soap and water) to smooth and press the adhesive firmly.
4. Remove the masking tape promptly: Remove the masking tape within three to five minutes of applying the adhesive. Do not wait until it dries, as this will tear the adhesive.
