A friend in Dubai is currently busy renovating his new home. The engineer in charge of his renovation said he needed to purchase some High Temperature Fire Resistant Silicone Sealant. However, he still had a lot of ordinary sealant left over, which he couldn’t use. He was very confused.

He asked me: “I have waterproof and mildew-resistant sealant and structural sealant, why do I need fire-retardant sealant? Can’t I use ordinary sealant?”

I told him: Ordinary sealant cannot replace fire-retardant sealant! In Dubai, the DCD (Dubai Civil Defense) fire safety inspection standards are very strict, and Dubai is located in a high-temperature environment year-round, making fire protection requirements even higher. Using fire-retardant sealant in high-temperature areas such as kitchen stoves, gas pipes, and fume extraction ducts is essential in home renovations.

Comparison of Ordinary and Fire-Resistant Sealants:

Ordinary sealants generally have a service temperature range of -40℃ to 150℃. So, will ordinary sealant ignite upon contact with a flame?

To directly demonstrate the differences between the two types of sealants, the Weidu Laboratory conducted a comparative test: two cured sealant strips were prepared, one a regular sealant and the other a high-temperature resistant fire-retardant sealant WD-336, and both were burned using a high-temperature flame gun.

Test Results:

The regular sealant, upon contact with the flame, ignited after a short time, producing smoke and gradually becoming powdery. The fire-retardant sealant WD-336, however, was difficult to ignite upon contact with the flame, producing no smoke during the burning process, demonstrating its effective fire-retardant effect.

Regular silicone sealants are mainly composed of siloxanes, base polymers, and other materials, withstanding temperatures up to 150°C. They lack fire-retardant properties and cannot withstand prolonged high-temperature environments; continued combustion upon contact with a flame will cause the seal to fail.

The high-temperature resistant fire-retardant silicone sealant contains flame retardants and high-temperature resistant materials in its formulation. Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are flame retardants that decompose and absorb heat under sustained high temperatures, releasing water vapor and diluting flammable gases. Ceramicized flame retardant materials form a hard ceramic body during combustion, providing flame retardancy and fire resistance. Metal oxides catalyze the formation of magnesium oxide (MgO) from the decomposition of magnesium hydroxide, resulting in a denser protective layer. This allows ceramization to occur at higher temperatures (e.g., 600℃~800℃), ensuring an effective ceramic protective layer is formed in the early stages of a fire.

WD-336 Neutral Silicone High-Temperature Fire-Resistant Sealant:

The UAE and Saudi Arabia have tropical desert climates, with outdoor temperatures reaching up to 50℃ in summer. Building exteriors, outdoor metal structures, and high-temperature equipment are subjected to prolonged exposure to sunlight. The surface temperature of these buildings is even higher than the outdoor temperature, posing a severe challenge to sealing systems. Ordinary sealants are prone to aging and cracking under prolonged high-temperature exposure, shortening their lifespan. Therefore, the use of fire-retardant sealants in engineering projects is crucial.

WD-336 is a professional high-temperature fire-retardant sealant that meets GB 23864 or UL 1479 fire resistance rating F-180 and GB 8624 B1 or UL 94 V-0 flame retardant rating requirements. It is high-temperature resistant, aging-resistant, and also waterproof and weather-resistant.

In the event of a fire, ordinary sealants cannot withstand the high temperatures and quickly fail, allowing smoke and toxic gases to rapidly penetrate pipes and gaps, accelerating the spread of the fire.
