High-quality windows are a very important part of a building structure. They maintain a stable and comfortable indoor environment by blocking the internal and external environments under different climatic conditions. As the boundary guardian of the window system, the quality and performance of the sealant directly affect the window system’s barrier function and lifespan.

Inferior sealants have low polymer content, few internal cross-linking nodes, loose cross-linking networks, and insufficient bonding interface anchors, which leads to their inability to withstand long-term ultraviolet rays and high humidity or low temperature environments, causing aging.

Such inferior sealants have a short aging cycle, weak resistance to external deformation, and are prone to peeling off. When the seal fails, the window system will leak air, water, and mold, and long-term neglect may lead to window deformation.

Choosing a high-quality, weather-resistant silicone sealant is particularly important. It can hold firm even in inconspicuous gaps, providing a safe and protective sealing layer for the window system!

How fast is the curing speed for window sealant?

During construction, the curing time of sealant is a major concern. Excessive curing time not only slows down subsequent work but also, if the sealant is not fully cured, wind pressure or displacement can cause bulging or sinking, affecting sealing performance.

WD866 boasts a satisfactory fast curing speed. At 25℃ and 75% humidity, the surface drying time is approximately 20-30 minutes, and the curing depth reaches 2.5-3.0 mm in 24 hours. The curing depth exceeds 5 mm in 72 hours.

The curing principle of silicone sealant is as follows: moisture in the air penetrates into the sealant, undergoes a hydrolysis reaction with the hardener, and then undergoes a condensation cross-linking reaction with 107 silicone rubber, thus completing deep curing. At low temperatures, both hydrolysis and condensation reactions slow down, significantly reducing the sealant’s curing speed.

At 5℃, the curing speed is approximately 30% of that at 25℃. In low-humidity environments, the lack of sufficient moisture in the air to drive the curing reaction of the sealant from the surface inwards significantly reduces the curing speed; the curing speed at 40% humidity is approximately 50% of that at 75% humidity.

When the sealant thickness exceeds 7mm, the deep curing time also increases significantly because thicker sealant makes moisture penetration more difficult, resulting in slower deep curing.

Some manufacturers add excessive calcium carbonate to their sealants. This not only reduces costs but also decreases the amount of hardener, thereby reducing the moisture consumption during hardener hydrolysis and indirectly accelerating the curing speed.

However, excessive calcium carbonate can compromise the sealant’s cohesive strength and adhesion to the substrate, shortening its aging cycle and potentially causing adhesion failure in severe cases. It also reduces the product’s long-term storage stability.

Through extensive comparative experiments and testing, Weidu has introduced a hardener that promotes hydrolysis and a powder formulation that optimizes the sealant’s consistency, improving the problem of excessively slow curing speeds under low temperature and low humidity conditions.

We recommend WD866, which achieves ideal adhesion and speeds up the installation process!

Why is WD866 the best for my window sealant?

It’s a high-grade, weather-resistant silicone sealant with high modulus and ±25% joint displacement capability. With a density of 1.5g/cm³, it can withstand temperature differences from -40℃ to +150℃. After curing, it forms a flexible, waterproof sealant that can withstand the shrinkage and expansion caused by temperature changes, providing wind and water resistance, UV resistance, and a service life of over 15 years. Most importantly, WD866 has passed Dubai DCLD testing and certification, making it a product that can withstand rigorous testing!

WD866 can be used for the most 70% of substrates. WD866 is not only suitable for doors and windows, but it can also be used on over 70% of substrates on the market, including glass, metal, tile, stone, sunroofs, composite materials, coated surfaces, etc. Whether used indoors or outdoors, it delivers excellent sealing performance.
